Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Check for shipping bolts
If this is a new or recently moved washer, look at the back panel for large metal bolts with plastic spacers. There are usually 3โ4 of them. Remove them with a wrench. The washer cannot spin properly with these installed.
- 2
Level the machine
Place a bubble level on top of the washer from side to side and front to back. Adjust the feet by turning them clockwise to lower and counter-clockwise to raise. All four feet must touch the floor firmly.
- 3
Lock the adjustable feet
Once level, tighten the lock nuts on each foot by turning them up against the base of the washer with a wrench. This prevents the feet from slowly vibrating loose over time.
- 4
Redistribute the load
Open the door and rearrange the clothes so they are spread evenly around the drum. A single heavy item like a comforter or towel bunch on one side causes massive imbalance. Mix heavy and light items together.
- 5
Add anti-vibration pads
If the washer is on a hard floor or upstairs, place rubber anti-vibration pads under each foot. These absorb shock and reduce noise significantly. Lift one corner at a time and slide them underneath.
If That Didn't Work
- Worn shock absorbers inside the machine
- Broken suspension spring
- Damaged counterweight or mounting bolts
When to Call a Professional
If the machine is level, bolts are removed, and loads are balanced but it still shakes violently, the internal shock absorbers or suspension springs may be worn out. A technician can replace them for $150โ$250.
