Apple iPhones Stuck on Apple Logo: How to Fix It Yourself
An iPhone stuck on the Apple logo is usually caused by a failed software update, a bad app, or corrupted data. This is almost always a software problem โ not a hardware one. Most people fix it with a simple force restart, and it costs nothing.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Using recovery mode or DFU mode will erase your data if you haven't backed up. Try a force restart first.
- Make sure your computer has the latest version of iTunes (Windows) or macOS (Mac) before attempting a restore.

Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Wait a few minutes
Sometimes after an update, your iPhone will show the Apple logo for up to 15 minutes while it finishes installing. If it's been less than 15 minutes, give it more time. If it's been over 30 minutes, move to the next step.
- 2
Force restart your iPhone
On iPhone 8 or newer: quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo disappears and reappears. On iPhone 7: hold Volume Down and Side button together for 10 seconds. On iPhone 6s or older: hold Home and Top button together. This fixes the problem about half the time.
- 3
Try recovery mode if force restart didn't work
Connect your iPhone to a computer with a cable. Open iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac). Then force restart again using the same buttons from Step 2, but keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen (a cable pointing to a computer icon). Your computer will detect the phone and give you the option to Update โ try Update first, as it keeps your data.
- 4
Use DFU mode as a last resort
If recovery mode didn't work, try DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode. Connect your phone to the computer. On iPhone 8+: press Volume Up, press Volume Down, hold Side button for 10 seconds, then while holding Side also hold Volume Down for 5 seconds, then release Side but keep holding Volume Down for 10 more seconds. The screen should stay black but iTunes/Finder will detect it. Choose Restore โ note this erases everything.
- 5
Restore and set up your iPhone
After the restore completes, your iPhone will restart like new. Follow the setup screens. If you have an iCloud backup, you can restore your data from it during setup. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to make sure you're on the latest iOS version.
If That Didn't Work
- A failing battery can cause boot loops. If your phone dies quickly or shuts off randomly, the battery may need replacing.
- Water damage to the logic board can cause startup issues.
- Very rarely, a faulty storage chip (NAND) prevents the phone from booting. This is not a DIY fix.
When to Call a Professional
If DFU mode and a full restore don't fix the problem, it's likely a hardware issue โ either the logic board or NAND storage chip. Repair costs $100โ$350 depending on the model. At that price, compare it to the cost of a refurbished replacement phone.
