Apple iPhones Speaker Not Working: How to Fix It Yourself
If your iPhone speaker isn't working, it's often caused by a blocked speaker grille, a software glitch, or a Bluetooth connection stealing your audio. Most of the time, a quick cleaning or settings change will fix it. You can usually solve this in under 10 minutes.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Power off your iPhone before cleaning or opening it.
- Don't stick metal objects into the speaker grille โ you'll damage the speaker membrane.
- Use compressed air gently. Blasting at full pressure can damage internal components.
Parts You May Need
Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Check the obvious stuff first
Make sure your ringer switch (the little switch on the left side of your phone) isn't set to silent โ you'll see orange if it's on silent. Also check that your volume is turned up by pressing the Volume Up button.
- 2
Turn off Bluetooth
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn it off. Your phone might be sending audio to a Bluetooth speaker, headphones, or your car instead of the built-in speaker. This is one of the most common reasons people think their speaker is broken.
- 3
Clean the speaker grille
Look at the bottom of your iPhone โ the speaker grille is the row of small holes to the right of the charging port. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently brush across the holes. Then use short bursts of compressed air from about 2 inches away. Pocket lint is a very common cause of muffled or no sound.
- 4
Test with different apps
Play a song in the Music or YouTube app, then try making a phone call on speaker. If one works but not the other, it's a software issue with a specific app, not a hardware problem. Also try going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and dragging the Ringer slider โ you should hear a preview sound.
- 5
Force restart your iPhone
On iPhone 8 or newer: quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. This clears audio software glitches that can make the speaker seem broken.
- 6
Replace the speaker if nothing else worked
If cleaning and software fixes didn't help, the speaker itself may be blown or damaged. Power off the phone, remove the bottom pentalobe screws, carefully open the phone, and replace the loudspeaker module. Search for a teardown video for your exact model โ it's usually just a few screws and one connector.
If That Didn't Work
- Water damage can short out the speaker. If your phone got wet recently, let it dry completely for 48 hours before assuming the speaker is dead.
- A case or screen protector might be blocking the speaker grille. Try removing your case and testing.
- The earpiece speaker (top of phone) and loudspeaker (bottom) are separate. If only one doesn't work, that narrows down the problem.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning and software fixes don't work, a speaker replacement at a repair shop costs $40โ$80. Apple charges $100+ for out-of-warranty speaker repairs. The part itself is cheap ($5โ$25), so if you're comfortable with small screws, the DIY route saves a lot.
