Apple iPhones Ghost Touch — Screen Tapping by Itself: How to Fix It Yourself
Ghost touch means the screen registers taps you didn't make — apps open randomly, text gets typed on its own, or the screen jumps around. This can be caused by a bad screen protector, a cracked screen, a software glitch, or a faulty digitizer. Start with the free fixes before assuming you need a new screen.

Step-by-Step Repair
- Step 1 of 61
Clean the screen thoroughly
Turn off the phone. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the screen clean. Moisture, oil, and debris can cause false touches. Make sure the screen is completely dry. Turn the phone back on and test.

Remove the screen protector
A damaged, bubbling, or poorly applied screen protector is one of the most common causes of ghost touch. Remove it completely. Clean the screen underneath. Test the phone without any protector. If ghost touch stops, get a new, quality tempered glass protector and apply it carefully without bubbles.

Force restart the phone
Quick press Volume Up, quick press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Software glitches can cause ghost touch, and a restart clears them. If it only happens with certain apps, those apps may be the issue — delete and reinstall them.

Update iOS
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple has released fixes for ghost touch issues on specific models (notably iPhone X and iPhone 11). Make sure you're running the latest iOS version.

Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This resets touch sensitivity and display settings without deleting your data. If ghost touch was caused by a corrupted setting, this fixes it.

Check for screen damage
If none of the above worked, inspect the screen carefully for hairline cracks, especially around the edges. A cracked digitizer causes ghost touch even if the display looks fine. Also check if the phone was exposed to water recently. If the screen is damaged, it needs professional replacement.

If That Didn't Work
- Using a cheap third-party charger can cause electrical interference that triggers ghost touch — try a different charger.
- The iPhone X had a known ghost touch issue due to a faulty display module — Apple offered a free repair program for this.
- Extreme heat or cold can temporarily cause touch sensitivity issues.
When to Call a Professional
If ghost touch persists after all software fixes and with the screen protector removed, the digitizer (touch layer of the screen) is faulty. Screen replacement costs $80–$200 at Apple or $50–$120 at a third-party shop. Check if your model is covered under any Apple repair programs — some iPhone X and iPhone 11 models qualify for free display replacement.
