InSinkErator Garbage Disposals Humming But Not Spinning: How to Fix It Yourself
A garbage disposal that hums but doesn't spin is jammed. The motor is trying to run but something is blocking the impeller plate from turning. This is one of the most common disposal problems and is almost always fixable in minutes with an Allen wrench.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- NEVER reach into a garbage disposal with your hand.
- Turn off the wall switch AND unplug or flip the breaker before attempting to clear a jam.

Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Turn off the switch immediately
If the disposal is humming, turn it off right away. Leaving it running while jammed will overheat the motor and trip the overload protector โ or worse, burn out the motor.
- 2
Unplug or cut power
Unplug the disposal from the outlet under the sink, or flip the circuit breaker. Verify it's dead by trying the switch.
- 3
Use the Allen wrench from below
Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench into the hex socket at the bottom center of the disposal. Work it back and forth. You're manually rotating the grinding plate to dislodge whatever is stuck.
- 4
Remove the jammed object from above
Shine a flashlight into the disposal from the sink drain. Use tongs or needle-nose pliers to pull out the obstruction. Common culprits: bones, peach pits, broken glass, small utensils, or a bottle cap.
- 5
Press the reset button and test
Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power, run cold water, and flip the switch. It should spin freely now.
If That Didn't Work
- Glass shards can wedge in the impeller. Shine a light and check carefully.
- Rust buildup can seize the flywheel if the disposal hasn't been used in a long time.
- The flywheel bearing may be failing if it jams repeatedly with no obstruction found.
When to Call a Professional
If the disposal jams repeatedly even after clearing it, the internal components may be worn out. Replacement units cost $80-200 and installation runs $100-200. If your unit is over 10 years old, replacement is usually smarter than repair.
