Sony Game Consoles PS4 Ejecting Disc Randomly: How to Fix It Yourself

The PS4 randomly ejecting discs is a well-known issue caused by a faulty eject button sensor (on touch-button models), static electricity buildup, or a loose manual eject screw. Sony designed the eject button using a capacitive touch sensor that's prone to false triggers.

⚡ Difficulty: Easy10-20 minutes💰 Parts cost: $0🔧 Tools: T8 Torx screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver

⚠️ Safety First

  • Unplug the PS4 completely before working on it.
  • Place the console on a flat, stable surface.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

Fully power off and unplug the PS4

Hold the power button on the PS4 until it beeps twice and shuts down completely. Unplug the power cable from the back. Wait 30 seconds. This drains static charge that can trigger the capacitive eject button. Plug it back in and test.

  2. 2

    Tighten the manual eject screw

On the bottom of the PS4, remove the small plastic cover to access the manual eject screw. Using a Phillips or Torx screwdriver (model-dependent), turn this screw clockwise 2-3 turns to tighten it. A loose eject screw can cause the drive to randomly eject. Do not overtighten.

  3. 3

Disable the eject button (rubber foot method)

On original PS4 models with the touch eject button, the rubber foot underneath the button can push against it. Remove the bottom rubber foot that's closest to the eject button. This prevents pressure on the capacitive sensor from the surface the PS4 sits on.

  4. 4

    Clean around the eject button

If your PS4 has a physical eject button, clean around it to remove any debris that might be pressing it. If it's a touch-sensitive button, wipe the area with a dry cloth. Moisture or grime on the capacitive sensor can trigger false ejects.

  5. 5

    Rebuild the database

Boot the PS4 into Safe Mode: hold the power button until you hear two beeps (about 7 seconds). Connect a controller via USB and select 'Rebuild Database.' This doesn't delete your games or saves but fixes software issues that can cause random disc ejection.

If That Didn't Work

  • Software bug (system update may fix it)
  • Overheating causing components to expand and trigger the sensor
  • Faulty disc drive ribbon cable

When to Call a Professional

If the PS4 keeps ejecting discs after all these steps, the eject button circuitry or the disc drive itself may be faulty. A repair shop can disable the touch sensor permanently and have you use only the software eject option.
