Sony Game Consoles PS5 Controller Drift: How to Fix It Yourself

DualSense stick drift means the analog stick registers movement when you're not touching it. This is caused by debris around the stick, worn potentiometers inside the module, or a software glitch. Try the free fixes before opening the controller.

โš ๏ธ Safety First

  • Opening the controller voids the warranty if still active. Check warranty status first.
  • Work on a clean, flat surface โ€” the controller has very small screws and ribbon cables.
  • Disconnect the battery before working on internal components.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Reset the controller

Turn off the PS5. Flip the controller over and find the small reset hole near the L2 button. Insert a pin or paperclip and hold for 5 seconds. Then connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button. This resets the Bluetooth pairing and can fix software-related drift.

  2. 2

    Update the controller firmware

On the PS5, go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Wireless Controller Device Software. Install any available updates. Sony has released firmware fixes for drift issues. Also go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers and increase the deadzone if available.

  3. 3

Clean around the stick with compressed air

Push the affected stick to one side and blast compressed air around the base where the stick meets the controller. Rotate the stick while spraying. Also try gently lifting the stick and spraying underneath. Dust and debris under the stick cap can cause drift without requiring disassembly.

  4. 4

Apply isopropyl alcohol around the stick base

Dip a cotton swab in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. Apply it around the base of the affected stick while slowly rotating the stick in circles. The alcohol dissolves grime and evaporates without residue. Let it dry for 5 minutes, then test. Repeat 2-3 times.

  5. 5

Open the controller and replace the stick module (advanced)

If cleaning didn't fix it, the potentiometer inside the stick module is worn out. Remove the 4 back screws, carefully pry apart the shell with a spudger, disconnect the battery ribbon cable, and access the stick module. Replacing the module requires desoldering โ€” if you're comfortable with a soldering iron, swap it out. Otherwise, some replacement modules are designed as drop-in replacements for certain revisions.

If That Didn't Work

  • Game-specific deadzone settings are too sensitive
  • Bluetooth interference from nearby devices
  • Software bug in a specific game

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning doesn't fix the drift and you're not comfortable soldering, a game console repair shop can replace the stick module for $20-$40. This is much cheaper than buying a new controller.
