Nintendo Game Consoles Nintendo Switch HDMI Not Working Docked: How to Fix It Yourself
A Switch that won't display on TV when docked is usually a connection order issue, a bad HDMI cable, or a dock power problem. The dock requires power to output HDMI โ no power means no video, even if the Switch is charging.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Only use the official Nintendo AC adapter with the dock โ third-party chargers have been known to damage Switch consoles.
- Make sure the dock USB-C connector is clean and undamaged before inserting the Switch.
Parts You May Need
Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Follow the correct connection order
This is the most common fix. Undock the Switch. Unplug everything from the dock. Now plug in this exact order: (1) plug the AC adapter into the dock, (2) plug the AC adapter into the wall outlet, (3) plug the HDMI cable into the dock, then into the TV, (4) place the Switch into the dock. The green light on the dock should turn on.
- 2
Check the dock's green LED
When the Switch is properly docked and powered, a small green LED on the bottom-left of the dock should light up. If it's not lit, the dock isn't getting power. Check the AC adapter connection. If the LED flashes and turns off, the dock may need a hard reset.
- 3
Try a different HDMI cable and TV input
Swap the HDMI cable for a known-working one. Also try a different HDMI input on your TV. Make sure the TV is set to the correct input. Some TVs have HDMI ports that don't support certain resolutions โ try each port.
- 4
Hard reset the dock
Unplug the AC adapter from the dock and the wall. Unplug the HDMI cable. Leave everything unplugged for 30 seconds. Reconnect following the order from Step 1. This resets the dock's internal state and clears HDMI handshake issues.
- 5
Check the Switch's TV output settings
With the Switch undocked, go to System Settings > TV Output. Set TV Resolution to 'Automatic.' Set RGB Range to 'Full Range' (or try 'Limited Range' if your TV is older). Make sure Match TV Power State is on. Then re-dock and test.
If That Didn't Work
- Third-party AC adapter not providing enough power to the dock
- Dirty or bent USB-C connector inside the dock
- Damaged HDMI port on the dock (especially from rough HDMI cable insertion)
- Switch USB-C port issue (rare)
When to Call a Professional
If the dock green light works, the HDMI cable is good, and the TV shows nothing, the dock's HDMI port or the Switch's USB-C port may be damaged. Nintendo offers repair service, or a repair shop can fix it.
