Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Check your location settings

Go to Settings > Location and make sure Location is turned on. Tap Mode or Location Accuracy and select High Accuracy (uses GPS, WiFi, and cell towers). If it is set to Battery Saving or Device Only, GPS may not work well. Also check that the map or navigation app has permission to use Location (Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions).

  2. 2

    Toggle Airplane Mode and restart

Turn on Airplane Mode, wait 10 seconds, then turn it off. This resets all wireless connections including GPS. Then restart your phone. Open your maps app and wait 30 seconds for the GPS to get a fix. Being outdoors with a clear view of the sky helps GPS lock much faster.

  3. 3

    Clear the map app cache

Go to Settings > Apps > Google Maps (or your navigation app) > Storage > Clear Cache. Outdated cached location data can cause GPS to show the wrong position or take a long time to update.

  4. 4

    Recalibrate the compass

Open Google Maps, tap the blue location dot, and tap Calibrate Compass. Follow the on-screen instructions to move your phone in a figure-8 pattern. This recalibrates the magnetic sensor that works with GPS for accurate direction. Poor compass calibration can make GPS navigation confusing even when your position is accurate.

  5. 5

    Update your phone and apps

Go to Settings > System > System Update and install any update. Also update Google Maps and any other navigation apps from the Play Store or App Store. GPS and location bugs are frequently fixed in updates.

If That Didn't Work

  • Being indoors, in a tunnel, or surrounded by tall buildings can block GPS signals.
  • A phone case with a metal plate (for magnetic car mounts) can interfere with GPS.
  • A VPN or mock location app (used for gaming) can override real GPS data.
  • Battery-saving modes can limit GPS accuracy to save power.

When to Call a Professional

GPS hardware failure is rare but possible after water damage or a significant drop. If GPS does not work at all even outdoors with a clear sky and all software fixes have been tried, the GPS antenna may be damaged. A repair shop can test and replace it, though this is uncommon.
