Samsung Android Phones Won't Turn On: How to Fix It Yourself
A Samsung Galaxy that won't turn on is usually just completely dead from a drained battery or a frozen system. Don't panic โ this is rarely a sign of permanent damage. A simple charge and force restart fixes it most of the time, and it costs nothing to try.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Use only a Samsung-compatible charger. Cheap knockoff chargers can damage your phone.
- If the phone feels hot while charging but the screen stays black, unplug it immediately and take it to a repair shop.

Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Charge it for at least 30 minutes
Plug your phone into a wall charger (not a computer). Use the original cable if you have it. Leave it plugged in for at least 30 minutes even if nothing appears on screen. When a battery is completely dead, it can take several minutes before the phone shows any sign of life โ even a charging icon.
- 2
Try a force restart while plugged in
While the phone is still plugged into the charger, press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button at the same time for 15-20 seconds. If the phone vibrates or shows the Samsung logo, let go and wait for it to boot up. Sometimes you need to try this 2-3 times.
- 3
Try a different cable and charger
A bad cable is one of the most common reasons a phone won't charge. Try a different USB cable and a different wall charger. If you can, try a wireless charger. Also check the charging port on your phone for lint or debris โ use a toothpick (not metal) to gently clean it out.
- 4
Boot into Safe Mode
If your phone briefly turns on then shuts off, try Safe Mode. Press and hold the Power button until the Samsung logo appears, then immediately press and hold the Volume Down button until the phone finishes booting. You'll see 'Safe mode' at the bottom. If it stays on in Safe Mode, a recently installed app is the problem โ uninstall your newest apps.
- 5
Try Recovery Mode
If the phone still won't boot normally: while the phone is off, press and hold Volume Up + Power button together until you see the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to scroll and the power button to select. Try 'Wipe cache partition' first โ this doesn't delete your data. Only use 'Factory reset' as a last resort, as it erases everything.
If That Didn't Work
- A completely dead battery that won't hold a charge needs to be replaced. If the phone only works while plugged in, the battery is shot.
- Liquid damage can cause a phone to stop powering on. Look for a red or pink water indicator inside the SIM tray slot.
- A faulty power button can prevent the phone from turning on even if the battery is fine.
When to Call a Professional
If charging, force restart, and recovery mode don't work, the issue is likely a dead battery ($10โ$30 part, $40โ$80 at a shop) or a damaged motherboard ($100โ$300+). A repair shop can test the battery quickly to tell you which it is.
