Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Turn off energy saver mode

Go to Settings > General or System > Energy Saving / Eco Mode. Turn it off. Energy saver mode drastically dims the screen. This is the #1 cause of a too-dark picture and the most commonly overlooked setting.

  2. 2

    Increase backlight/brightness

Go to Settings > Picture. Increase the Backlight setting (this is different from Brightness). Backlight controls how bright the LEDs behind the screen are. Set it to 80-100% for normal viewing.

  3. 3

    Check ambient light sensor

Some TVs have a light sensor that auto-adjusts brightness based on room lighting. Find this in Picture > Advanced Settings > Ambient Light Detection and turn it off if your room is dark.

  4. 4

    Switch picture mode

Change the picture mode from Cinema/Movie to Standard or Vivid. Cinema modes are intentionally dimmer for movie watching. Standard mode provides good brightness for everyday viewing.

  5. 5

    Reset picture settings

If you've made too many adjustments, reset picture settings to factory defaults. Then just adjust the backlight up. Factory defaults are a good baseline for most viewing environments.

If That Didn't Work

  • Failing LED backlight (if brightness settings don't help)
  • HDMI content outputting in HDR that the TV can't handle
  • Damaged dimming zones on local-dimming TVs

When to Call a Professional

If maxing out backlight and disabling energy saver doesn't help, the LED backlight may be failing. This is a hardware issue requiring professional repair ($100-$200). For older TVs, replacement may be more cost-effective.
