Whirlpool Refrigerators Ice Buildup in Freezer: How to Fix It Yourself

Ice buildup in a Whirlpool freezer means the automatic defrost system has failed. The fridge runs defrost cycles every 8โ€“12 hours to melt frost off the evaporator coils. When the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fails, frost accumulates until airflow is blocked.

โšก Difficulty: Mediumโฑ 30-60 minutes๐Ÿ’ฐ Parts cost: $0โ€“$30๐Ÿ”ง Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Hair dryer, Multimeter, Towels

โš ๏ธ Safety First

  • Unplug the fridge before removing panels or testing parts.
  • Do not use a knife or sharp object to chip ice off the evaporator coils.
  • Move frozen food to a cooler during the repair.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Unplug and empty the freezer

Move all frozen food to a cooler with ice packs. Remove all shelves, bins, and the ice maker bucket. This gives you access to the back panel where the evaporator coils are.

  2. 2

    Remove the freezer back panel

Unscrew the panel at the back wall of the freezer. You will see the evaporator coils covered in frost or a solid sheet of ice. The defrost heater is a glass or metal tube running along the bottom of the coils.

  3. 3

    Defrost the coils manually

Use a hair dryer on medium heat to melt all the ice. Hold it 6 inches away and work slowly across the coils. Catch the water with towels. This may take 15โ€“20 minutes if the buildup is heavy.

  4. 4

    Test the defrost heater

Once the ice is melted, disconnect the defrost heater wires and test with a multimeter for continuity. If there is no continuity, the heater is burned out and needs replacing. Swap it out โ€” it usually unclips from the coils.

  5. 5

    Test the defrost thermostat

The defrost thermostat is a small round sensor clipped to the evaporator tubing. Test it for continuity when cold (it should have continuity below 37 degrees F). No continuity when cold means it is bad and is preventing the heater from turning on.

  6. 6

    Reassemble and monitor

Install the new part, reattach the back panel, replace shelves and food, and plug the fridge back in. Monitor for ice buildup over the next week. If frost returns, the defrost timer or control board may also be faulty.

If That Didn't Work

  • Failed defrost timer or adaptive defrost control board
  • Freezer door seal not sealing properly (warm air entering)
  • Door left ajar frequently

When to Call a Professional

If you replaced the heater and thermostat but frost returns quickly, the defrost control board is likely the issue. A technician can diagnose and replace it for $150โ€“$250.
