Apple Laptops MacBook Not Charging: How to Fix It Yourself
A MacBook that won't charge is usually caused by a dirty charging port, a bad cable, an SMC issue, or a worn battery. Check the basics before assuming hardware failure โ Apple's SMC reset fixes charging issues more often than you'd expect.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Only use Apple-certified or MFi-certified chargers โ cheap knockoffs can damage the battery or cause fire.
- If the MacBook or charger smells burnt or feels excessively hot, stop using it immediately.
Parts You May Need
Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Check the charger and cable
Inspect the charging cable for fraying, kinks, or damage near the connectors. Try a different USB-C cable if you have one. Also try a different power adapter. If the MacBook charges with a different cable or adapter, you've found the problem.
- 2
Clean the charging port
Shut down the MacBook. Use a flashlight to look inside the USB-C or MagSafe port for lint, dust, or debris. Gently clean it with a wooden toothpick โ never use metal. Compressed air can also help. A packed port is a very common cause of intermittent or failed charging.
- 3
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)
For Intel MacBooks: shut down. Press and hold Shift+Control+Option on the left side + Power button for 10 seconds simultaneously. Release all keys, then press Power to start up. For Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1/M2/M3+): just shut down completely, wait 30 seconds, and start up โ the SMC resets automatically on a full shutdown.
- 4
Reset the NVRAM/PRAM
For Intel MacBooks: shut down. Turn on and immediately hold Option+Command+P+R for 20 seconds. The MacBook may restart during this. For Apple Silicon MacBooks, NVRAM resets automatically on every startup, so skip this step.
- 5
Check battery health
Click the Apple menu > System Settings > Battery > Battery Health (or hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar on older macOS). If it says 'Service Recommended,' the battery is degraded and may not hold or accept a charge properly. A battery replacement may be needed.
If That Didn't Work
- macOS 'Optimized Battery Charging' pausing charge at 80% (this is intentional)
- Running resource-heavy tasks that consume power faster than the charger provides
- Faulty USB-C port on the MacBook (try a different port if your model has two)
- Water damage to charging circuitry
When to Call a Professional
If the SMC reset and a known-good charger don't fix it, the charging circuit on the logic board or the battery may need replacement. Apple or an authorized service provider can run diagnostics.
