Generic HVAC Window AC Not Cooling: How to Fix It Yourself
A window AC that runs but does not cool is almost always a dirty filter or dirty coils. When the filter gets clogged with dust, airflow drops and the unit cannot cool your room. A quick cleaning usually brings it back to life.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Unplug the window AC unit before cleaning or doing any work on it.
- Be careful around the sharp metal fins on the coils โ they can cut you.
- Never spray water directly onto electrical components.
Parts You May Need
Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Unplug the unit
Pull the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait about 5 minutes before starting work. This gives the system time to equalize pressure, which protects the compressor when you turn it back on later.
- 2
Remove and clean the air filter
Pop open the front panel and slide out the filter. Most window AC filters are reusable mesh screens. Rinse the filter under warm running water and gently scrub off dust with your fingers or a soft brush. Let it air dry completely before putting it back. If the filter is torn or falling apart, replace it.
- 3
Clean the front evaporator coils
With the filter out, look at the metal fins behind it โ these are the evaporator coils. If they are coated in dust or grime, gently vacuum them with a brush attachment or spray them lightly with water. Do not bend the fins. If any fins are bent, a fin comb can straighten them out.
- 4
Check the rear condenser coils
The back of the unit (the part that sticks outside) has another set of coils. If you can safely access it, brush off leaves, dirt, and debris. Good airflow on the back coils is just as important as the front. Make sure nothing is blocking the rear of the unit.
- 5
Reassemble and test
Put the dry filter back in and snap the front panel closed. Plug the unit in, set it to the coldest setting, and let it run for 15 minutes. You should feel noticeably colder air coming out. If the air is still warm, the unit may be low on refrigerant or the compressor may be failing.
If That Didn't Work
- Room is too large for the BTU rating of the unit
- Refrigerant leak (unit will need professional recharge or replacement)
- Compressor is failing (you may hear clicking but no cold air)
- Thermostat sensor is bent away from the coils
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the filter and coils does not help, the unit may be low on refrigerant. Window AC units are sealed systems and cannot be easily recharged. In most cases it is cheaper to replace the unit than to pay for a refrigerant recharge. If the compressor clicks but never starts, the unit is likely at end of life.
