Microsoft Game Consoles Xbox Series X Disc Drive Noise: How to Fix It Yourself

A loud Xbox Series X disc drive is common — some noise during disc reading is normal. However, grinding, clicking, or constant loud spinning usually means the disc is unbalanced, the drive needs recalibration, or the console's orientation is affecting the drive.

⚡ Difficulty: Medium10-30 minutes💰 Parts cost: $0🔧 Tools: T8 Torx screwdriver (if opening console)

⚠️ Safety First

  • Opening the console voids the warranty. Check warranty status before proceeding.
  • Unplug the console completely before opening it.
  • Do not insert anything into the disc slot while the drive is spinning.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Determine when the noise happens

Does it only happen when you first insert a disc (during installation)? Only during gameplay from disc? Or constantly while a disc is inside? Noise only during initial installation is normal — the drive spins at max speed to install the game. Once installed, the disc should spin much less.

  2. 2

    Try a different disc

Eject the noisy disc and try a different game disc. If the noise happens with all discs, the issue is the drive. If only one disc is noisy, that disc may be slightly warped or have a label causing imbalance. Inspect the disc for scratches, warps, or residue.

  3. 3

    Change the console orientation

If your Xbox is vertical, try laying it horizontal (or vice versa). Disc drives in vertical orientation work harder against gravity, and some Xbox Series X units are noisier in one position. Horizontal is generally quieter for disc operations.

  4. 4

    Clear the system cache

Press and hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds to shut it down completely. Unplug the power for 30 seconds. Hold the Xbox button on the console while it's unplugged for another 10 seconds (this drains residual power). Plug back in and start up. This can reset the disc drive behavior.

  5. 5

    Check for console vibration

Make sure the console is on a flat, stable surface. The rubber feet should all be making contact. If the console is on a wobbly surface or touching other objects, vibrations from the disc drive get amplified significantly. Place it on a solid shelf away from other electronics.

If That Didn't Work

  • Failing disc drive motor (grinding noise)
  • Loose internal component vibrating against the disc drive
  • Disc drive firmware issue (rare)

When to Call a Professional

If the disc drive makes grinding noises and won't read discs, the drive motor or laser assembly may be failing. Microsoft offers repair service, or a console repair shop can replace the drive. Note: Xbox disc drives are paired to the motherboard.
