Samsung Dryers Not Spinning: How to Fix It Yourself
A Samsung dryer that heats but does not spin usually has a broken drive belt. If the drum turns freely by hand and you do not feel any resistance, the belt has snapped. This is a common wear item and a straightforward replacement.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Unplug the dryer before any repair work.
- If gas dryer, turn off the gas supply valve first.
- The drum is heavy โ support it when removing the front panel.

Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Unplug the dryer
Pull the power cord from the wall outlet. For gas dryers, also turn off the gas supply valve behind the machine.
- 2
Open the drum by hand
Open the dryer door and try spinning the drum by hand. If it spins very freely with no resistance, the belt is broken. If it does not spin at all, something may be jamming the drum.
- 3
Remove the top and front panels
Use a putty knife to release the spring clips under the top panel at the front edge. Lift the top. Disconnect the door switch wires, remove the screws holding the front panel, and lift it off. You can now see the drum and belt path.
- 4
Replace the belt
Lift the drum slightly and slide the new belt around it with the grooved side facing the drum. Route the belt under the idler pulley and around the motor shaft in a zigzag pattern. Refer to the diagram on the belt packaging or look for the routing diagram inside the dryer cabinet.
- 5
Inspect the drum rollers
While the drum is accessible, spin each drum roller by hand. They should spin freely and quietly. If they wobble, squeak, or resist, replace the roller kit. Worn rollers put extra strain on the new belt.
- 6
Reassemble and test
Set the drum back in place, reattach the front panel and top panel, reconnect the door switch wires, and plug the dryer back in. Run a timed dry cycle for 10 minutes and confirm the drum is spinning smoothly.
If That Didn't Work
- Faulty idler pulley
- Seized drum roller bearings
- Defective drive motor
When to Call a Professional
If the motor itself is humming but will not turn, the motor may be burned out. Motor replacement costs $150โ$250 with labor and requires handling the electrical connections properly.
