Samsung Dryers HE Error Code (Heating Element Issue): How to Fix It Yourself

The HE code means your Samsung dryer is not reaching the right temperature. In electric dryers, this is usually a burned-out heating element or a blown thermal fuse. Both are common failure points. In gas dryers, the issue may be the gas valve solenoid or igniter โ€” gas repairs are best left to professionals.

โšก Difficulty: Hardโฑ 45-90 minutes๐Ÿ’ฐ Parts cost: $20โ€“$60๐Ÿ”ง Tools: Multimeter, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, Nut driver set (1/4 inch and 5/16 inch)

โš ๏ธ Safety First

  • Unplug the dryer before any disassembly โ€” this repair involves electrical components.
  • If it is a gas dryer, the HE code may indicate a gas valve issue โ€” do not attempt gas repairs yourself.
  • Do not bypass the thermal fuse โ€” it is a critical safety device.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

Unplug the dryer and access the back panel

Pull the power cord from the outlet. Remove the screws holding the back panel of the dryer in place. Set the panel aside. The heating element assembly is usually located at the bottom-right or bottom-left, inside a metal housing.

  2. 2

    Test the thermal fuse first

Find the thermal fuse โ€” it is a small, flat component on the blower housing or exhaust duct. Set your multimeter to continuity mode. Touch the probes to each terminal. If you do not get a beep or zero reading, the fuse is blown. This is the cheapest and most common fix.

  3. 3

    Test the heating element

Locate the heating element housing (a metal can with wires running to it). Disconnect the wires and test for continuity across the two terminals. If there is no continuity, the element is broken and needs replacing. Also test each terminal to the housing โ€” if you get continuity there, the element is grounded and must be replaced.

  4. 4

    Replace the faulty part

If the thermal fuse is blown, unscrew it and install the new one in its place โ€” it takes about 2 minutes. If the heating element is bad, remove the screws holding the element housing, disconnect the wires (take a photo first so you remember where they go), and install the new element.

  5. 5

    Reassemble and test

Reconnect all wires, put the back panel on, and plug the dryer in. Run a timed heat cycle for 10 minutes and check that the drum gets warm. If it heats up, you are done. Also clean your dryer vent โ€” a clogged vent is often the reason the thermal fuse blew in the first place.

If That Didn't Work

  • Blown high-limit thermostat
  • Defective cycling thermostat
  • Faulty control board not sending power to the element
  • Gas valve solenoid failure (gas dryers only)

When to Call a Professional

If you do not own a multimeter or are not comfortable working with electrical connections, call a pro. Heating element replacement runs $150โ€“$300 with labor. Gas dryer heating issues should always be handled by a professional.
