GE Dryers Takes Too Long to Dry: How to Fix It Yourself
A GE dryer that runs but takes two or three cycles to dry clothes almost always has a venting problem. Lint buildup in the vent duct restricts airflow, trapping moisture inside the drum. Cleaning the vent system fixes this in most cases.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Unplug the dryer before disconnecting the vent.
- A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard โ this repair is important for safety.
- Do not use vinyl or foil accordion-style duct โ use rigid or semi-rigid metal.

Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Check the lint screen
Pull out the lint screen and clean it thoroughly. If it has a waxy film from dryer sheets, scrub it with hot water and a brush. Hold it under running water โ if water pools instead of flowing through, the screen is coated and needs cleaning.
- 2
Disconnect and inspect the vent duct
Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall. Disconnect the vent duct from the back of the dryer. Look inside the duct โ if you see packed lint, that is your problem.
- 3
Clean the entire vent run
Use a dryer vent brush kit to clean lint from the duct all the way to the outside vent hood. Alternatively, use a leaf blower to blast lint out from the dryer end. Go outside and make sure lint comes out the exterior vent hood.
- 4
Clean inside the dryer
Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to clean lint from inside the dryer where the vent connects. Also vacuum around the lint trap housing โ lint accumulates down there over time.
- 5
Reconnect and test
Reattach the vent duct with a clamp (no screws โ screws catch lint). Push the dryer back and plug it in. Run a normal load and check drying time. It should dry in one cycle. Go outside and confirm strong airflow from the vent hood.
If That Didn't Work
- Faulty moisture sensor inside the drum
- Weak heating element (heats but not fully)
- Gas valve coils failing intermittently (gas dryers)
When to Call a Professional
If the vent is clean and the dryer still takes too long, the heating element or gas valve coils may be partially failing. A technician can measure heat output and airflow for $80โ$150 to pinpoint the issue.
