LG Dishwashers Not Drying Dishes: How to Fix It Yourself

LG dishwashers primarily use condensation drying, not a heated element like older machines. This means drying performance depends heavily on rinse aid, proper loading, and using the right cycle. A few adjustments usually fix the issue without replacing anything.

โš ๏ธ Safety First

  • Let the dishwasher cool before opening it immediately after a cycle.
  • Do not block the vent opening on the door interior.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Fill the rinse aid dispenser

Open the rinse aid compartment on the inside of the door (next to the detergent dispenser). Fill it to the full line. Rinse aid is essential for condensation drying โ€” it helps water sheet off dishes instead of forming droplets. Set the dispenser to the highest level.

  2. 2

Use the Extra Dry or Heated Dry option

Select the Extra Dry or Heated Dry option on your cycle (if your model has it). This extends the drying phase and uses the built-in heater to boost drying performance. Avoid the Quick Wash cycle if drying is important.

  3. 3

    Load dishes properly

Angle bowls and cups so water does not pool on their tops. Place plastics on the top rack only โ€” plastic does not retain heat well enough for condensation drying. Avoid nesting items together where water gets trapped between them.

  4. 4

Crack the door after the cycle

When the cycle finishes, crack the door open an inch or two and wait 15 minutes. This lets steam escape and dramatically improves drying results. Some newer LG models do this automatically.

  5. 5

    Check the vent

Some LG models have a vent on the inside of the door that releases steam during drying. Make sure it is not blocked by a tall item on the top rack. If the vent fan is not running (you should hear it during dry), the fan motor may need replacement.

If That Didn't Work

  • Faulty vent fan motor
  • Defective heating element
  • Thermostat not activating the heated dry phase

When to Call a Professional

If you have tried all the above and dishes are still soaking wet, the vent fan motor or heating element may be faulty. A technician can test and replace these for $100โ€“$200.
